Students, who cannot apply directly to study at German Institutes of Higher Education because they don’t have an accepted school leaving certificate, have to take an exam (Feststellungsprüfung) before they study (equivalent to the German „ Abitur”).
In order to pass this entrance exam successfully, universities offer potential applicants 12-month preparation courses (Studienkollegs) . The course ends with the exam and the permission to study.
Entry to the Studienkollegs is also restricted. As there are more applicants than free places, foreign applicants have to take an entrance exam for the Studienkolleg. You can take the entrance exam at various Studienkolleges ; individual Studienkollegs may have different entrance exams and demands.
The 4-week GLS Preparation course prepares you completely for the demands of this exam (whichever Studienkolleg you have applied for). It practises the areas focused on in the exam: German and mathematics.
With practice tests and relevant material, we prepare you for the following requirements:
ENTRANCE EXAM: GERMAN
Recommended material: Uni-Deutsch 1, Wissenschaftsdeutsch, Booksbaum Verlag
- Introduction to analysing academic structures and texts
- Introduction to describing and interpreting graphic material
- Revision of core points of German syntax and morphology
- Transformation exercises and fill-in the gap exercises with past papers
- Writing practice with individual correction
ENTRANCE EXAM: MATHEMATICS
Recommended material: Dudenverlag: Abiturwissen-Box
- Functions and graphs
- Equations and square root calculations
- Logarithmena, differential and integral calculus
- Business mathematics
- Percentages and statistics
Please note: the course consists of 20 teaching hours (i.e. 20 x 45 mins) per week. In order to achieve a good result in the test, you should plan on doing at least 90 mins preparation and homework per day.

Prior to arrival
After arrival in Berlin:

How it works - step by step
- Contact us
Fill in this form, attaching your high school diploma and telling us, if you already studied in your home country.
- GLS will check your documents FOR FREE
We will tell you if your high school diploma grants you immediate access to a German university or if you will have to do the preparatory "Studienkolleg" (1 year). We will also tell you how many months of German course @ the GLS German Language School in Berlin you will approximately need, how much you would have to pay and how to go about your visa application.
- If you accept the road map to university
... as we outline it for you, we will send you an invoice and ask you to provide all necessary documents.
- Having received your payment and documents
... GLS will send you a) a conditional acceptance letter issued by a German university cooperating with GLS and b) an invitation letter for the language course at GLS. You need both documents to apply for a student applicant visa. The student applicant visa grants you student status right away - with this visa you can stay up to 12 months in Germany to learn German and to prepare yourself for university studies, and having done that you can switch to a student visa without having to leave Germany again.
- Once you are in Berlin
... and do your German course with us, we offer weekly consultations and assistance. If your visa permits it, you can but you do not have to attend the university that issued the conditional acceptance for you. You can also apply at other universities, and should you want to do that after your arrival in Germany, GLS will help you.
