Your Pathway to a German University – Step by Step
Wondering what happens after you fill out our form and send your documents (your high school diploma and, if applicable, transcripts or university credits)? Here’s how the University Pathway Germany works:
Free Eligibility Check
We review your documents free of charge and without obligation. If you’re eligible to study in Germany, GLS will design a personalized roadmap to admission — including a clear timeline and a full overview of costs.
Secure Your Place in the Program
If you’re happy with your roadmap, we’ll send you an official confirmation of acceptance into the University Pathway Germany program, along with an invoice.
Need a visa? Full payment is required before we can issue the official invitation letter for your visa application.
Arrive in Berlin & Start Your German Course
Once your German language course begins at GLS Berlin, you’ll receive weekly guidance and personal support. We assist with all the essentials: city registration, visa extensions, bank account setup — while making sure you improve your German and pass the required language exam.
Transition to University
After you complete the language requirement, GLS finalizes your university or Studienkolleg applications. You can begin your studies in Germany in April or October (two intakes per year).
.
Do you need a Studienkolleg (Foundation Year) to study in Germany?
It depends:
- If you already studied at a university in your home country or your high school diploma is equivalent to the German Abitur, you don’t need a Studienkolleg.
- Otherwise, you’ll join a one-year Studienkolleg (prep program for international students) before entering university.
Don’t worry - we’ll check your documents for free and tell you exactly what applies to you.
No matter your pathway, reaching the required German level is essential. See how long it may take you.

Student Visa for Germany – Do You Need One?
No Visa Needed:
Students from Australia, Canada, EU countries, Honduras, Iceland, Israel, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Norway, Switzerland, and the USA can enter Germany on a tourist visa. At GLS Berlin, we’ll help you get a residence permit so you can study at a German university if you meet the academic requirements.
Who Needs a Student Visa:
If your country requires a visa according to the German Foreign Office list, you’ll need:
- A conditional university acceptance letter or a VPD (Verification of Eligibility for University Studies in Germany)
- Sometimes, proof of basic German language skills is also required
GLS visa support:
- We provide your conditional acceptance letter or VPD and an invitation to a German course at GLS Berlin.
- You can then apply for a study preparatory visa to stay in Germany for up to 12 months to learn German and prepare for university.
- After your German course, you can apply for a student visa or residence permit for study purposes — usually without leaving Germany.
