History & Architecture

Learning German at GLS offers a firsthand glimpse into Berlin’s rich history. Our classroom building, built in 1964, stands on the ruins of World War II.

Its modernist design stands in striking contrast to the surrounding 19th-century architecture.

The Berlin Wall, erected in 1961 to divide East and West Berlin, ran a 9-minute walk away. Today, this former border strip is a popular park, famous for its flea market (Mauerpark).

In 2005, GLS founder Barbara Jaeschke acquired the site and relocated her language school (est. 1983) here.

The building - formerly a public school that had been abandoned after the fall of the Berlin Wall (1989) - was restored and revitalized by GLS into a global social hub for German learners.
