How GLS Embraces Sustainability
GLS is committed to sustainable resource use and aligns with the UN Global Compact and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals. The ongoing eco-friendly renovation of the GLS Campus Berlin reflects our dedication. Below, learn more about our sustainability efforts.
IH International House Sustainability Seal

In 2023, GLS was awarded the IH Seal for Environmental Sustainability.
IH - International House World Organization - defined actions to be taken in order to protect the environment. GLS completed these action across 8 categories (among them biodiversity) and passed the audit.
Our commitment:
1. We Use 100% Green Electricity
At GLS, we power our entire Berlin campus—including seminar rooms, student apartments, and Hotel Oderberger—with 100% clean, renewable electricity.
All lighting is energy-efficient LED. Additionally, our websites are hosted on servers powered entirely by green energy.
2. Smart Heating & Energy Efficiency
All radiators on the GLS campus use smart thermostats that turn off automatically when windows are open or the set temperature is reached. We also operate an on-site combined heat and power plant, using waste heat to generate electricity.
3. Sustainable Water Use
GLS uses its own well and rainwater collection system to irrigate the campus gardens—no drinking water needed. Signs in hotel rooms and public areas encourage guests to use water responsibly.
4. Promoting Biodiversity
Our Berlin campus features large green spaces, herb gardens, fruit trees (used in our kitchens), a bee hotel, flower meadows, composting areas, and birdhouses—supporting biodiversity and natural habitats.
5. Going paperless
We’ve digitized most front- and back-office operations to cut down on paper. When paper is needed, we use 100% recycled paper only.
How You Can Help
Simple Ways to Be Sustainable During Your Stay
1. Travel the Eco-Friendly Way
If you're coming from within Europe, why not consider taking the train to Berlin? It might take a bit longer, but it's usually more climate-friendly—and sometimes even cheaper than flying!
If you do fly, try to book direct flights to reduce emissions, and consider offsetting your CO₂ with organizations like Atmosfair. You can also use a CO₂ comparison calculator to choose the greenest travel option.
2. Live Sustainably While in Berlin
Berlin makes it easy to go green! Use public transport or rent a bike to get around the city. Whether you're staying in a homestay or apartment, be mindful of energy use - turn off lights and only use heaters when needed.
Keep your showers short to save water, and when dining out, give vegetarian or vegan options a try - they're delicious and climate-friendly!
Waste less by separating your trash, avoiding plastic, and bringing your own reusable water bottle and lunch box.
